Metzeschmelz – a former industrial area between Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange – is being transformed into a new, cohesive urban district in Luxembourg. The area is being reimagined from the ground up with a strong focus on sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, and quality of life. The district is planned as a dense and vibrant urban environment with sports facilities, local shops, leisure amenities, daycare institutions, as well as primary schools and youth education. At the same time, strong connections to the public transport system are ensured. Car dependency is significantly reduced through the establishment of strategically located mobility hubs that support a predominantly car-free everyday life.
Metzeschmelz is also based on the principles of a connected and circular economy, where resources are used responsibly and locally. This includes, among other things, the use of solar energy, reuse of rainwater and wastewater, and the design of urban spaces as urban forests that contribute to biodiversity and microclimate.

Selected parts of the former steelworks are preserved and integrated into the new urban structure. This gives the area a distinct identity, where industrial history and future urban development meet in a strong and site-specific expression.
